Overview

The second phase of the Digital Borderlands project, The Digital Borderlands in the Classroom Fellowship Program and Summer Institute, which will occur between 2023-2027, focuses on digital borderlands principles in the classroom by integrating library services into faculty and student research workflows, with particular emphasis on the use of digital scholarship tools and archival collections. The University of Arizona is well-positioned to provide leadership in pivoting the integration of library services into the research processes of students through facilitating the creation of new assignments, or the redevelopment of existing assignments, by the University of Arizona faculty.

The Digital Borderlands in the Classroom Fellowship Program and Summer Institute will offer a compelling platform for accomplishing this work, intending to utilize the research outputs created in the Research Grants phase of the Digital Borderlands project to advance student learning. Harnessing the spirit of the first phase of the Digital Borderlands initiative, Digital Borderlands in the Classroom will provide students with impactful learning experiences that include technology skill development, engagement with primary sources, and a greater understanding of the borderlands region and communities.

Goals

The primary goals for Digital Borderlands Classroom Integrations are to:

  • Facilitate student research on the U.S.-Mexico borderlands in ways that enhance students’ digital literacy, archival literacy, and cultural engagement.
  • Integrate library services and expertise into faculty members’ assignment design process and the subsequent student research process in their courses.
  • Develop faculty skills in the use of digital scholarship tools, archival collections, and culturally responsive pedagogy to improve instructional impacts and student learning.
  • Share the assignments created by institute attendees through the Digital Borderlands Anthology open educational resource and a one-day symposium.
